Sphynx cats are not native to Egypt, and they are not a naturally occurring breed. The breed was developed in Toronto, Canada in the 1960s when a domestic cat gave birth to a hairless kitten. Breeders then worked to develop the Sphynx breed by breeding the hairless cats with coated cats, and the breed was recognized by The International Cat Association (TICA) in 2002. The name "Sphynx" was chosen for the breed because the breed's appearance is similar to that of the ancient Egyptian Sphinx statues. While the breed may be named after the Sphinx and may have a somewhat exotic appearance, they are not native to Egypt and do not have any direct connection to the country.
