Sphynx cats are known for their unique appearance, with their hairless bodies and wrinkled skin. But why do they lack fur?
The hairless trait in Sphynx cats is caused by a naturally occurring genetic mutation. This mutation leads to a deficiency in a protein called keratin, which is responsible for the growth of hair, nails, and other protective structures in the body. As a result, Sphynx cats are born without fur and remain hairless throughout their lives.
Despite their lack of hair, Sphynx cats are not completely without any form of insulation. They have a thin layer of downy fur, as well as a thicker layer of fat beneath their skin, which helps to keep them warm. Additionally, they have an unusually high metabolism, which also helps to regulate their body temperature.
While some may assume that hairless cats are more prone to health problems, this is not necessarily the case. Sphynx cats are generally healthy and can live long lives with proper care. However, they do require some special attention, such as regular baths to remove excess oil from their skin and protection from the sun to prevent sunburn.
